We have many members of staff all of whom contribute in various ways to maintain all aspects of the camp to ensure you have a great stay. If you wish to leave a tip/gratuity, please put it in the tip box in your kitchen.
ROADS & WALKWAYS
Do not walk in the long grass, stay within the short grass around your camp and to the walkways and roads. Do not go for walks around the property, wild animals do roam freely. We are in their habitat so please respect them and keep your distance from them.
We kindly ask you NOT to walk in FRONT of other camps and respect the privacy of the other guests.
NOISE
Please respect other guests and keep noise to a minimum and refrain from playing LOUD music in the camp.
NOISE FROM THE COMMUNITY
Our camp is amongst and part of the community of Muhokya. Sometimes in the event of public holidays, weddings, burials and other cultural celebrations, we do experience some noise from the community. It’s generally isolated events and not an ongoing disturbance.
LIGHTS & POWER
The tent lights operate using solar power. There are 2 lights in the main kitchen, dining and mess tent and you can find the light switches on the front of the metal trunk between the daybed and the kitchen. You’ll also find the USB charging station there. The sleeping tent has 2 lights, 1 in the sleeping area and 1 in the bathroom. You will find the switches between the two beds.
We ask that when you are not using the lights, switch them off to conserve energy and to avoid attracting insects to the light. Turn off all lights when you leave the camp and when you go to bed at night.
CHARGING FACILITIES
There are standard USB charging facilities in the main tent of each camp. We don’t have plug sockets or USB-C sockets. If you have a device that charges via US-C, you should travel with and use an adapter. We do not have plug sockets however, if you have laptops or cameras, etc. that need charging via a plug socket, please ask and we can assist you. DO NOT leave phones, tablets and other electronics or any other valuables unattended in your camp. Little Elephant will not be held responsible for any loss of items.
WIFI
Your glamping camp has WiFi, please ask the hospitality team for the password. We ask that you avoid heavy downloads. The WiFi is for guest use only, please do not share the password.
KITCHEN & DISHES
We have a fully equipped kitchen in which you should find everything you need to prepare your meals. Please report any damages or breakages to the management. Keep the kitchen clean and wash the dishes to avoid attracting ants and rodents and store ALL food in the green metal food storage box provided or in the fridge.
STOVE TOP
The gas stove top is self igniting. Press the black knob in and turn to the left (anti-clockwise) to light. When the dial is at the 9 o’clock position, this is the stove’s highest setting. To set the flame lower, slowly move the dial clockwise towards the off position (12 o’clock). We do our best to make sure that the gas bottle has sufficient gas, but if you do run out, please let management know.
FRIDGE
The fridge in the kitchen is operated using solar power. DO NOT adjust the temperature dial as it is set to refrigerator mode. It should always remain in the number 1 setting. Changing the setting may result in freezing the contents of the fridge. Management will not be responsible for any frozen contents.
7 STAGE WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEM
In your kitchen is a 7 stage water purification system with reverse osmosis and UV light treatment so that you can enjoy safe, clean drinking water without plastic bottles, furthering our approach to an eco-friendly environment. Before use, turn on the switch above the drinking water tap, fill your bottle and please turn off the switch when not in use. Please use this water for drinking purposes only as the system is limited to the quantity that it can supply.
The water from the kitchen sink tap should be used for filling the kettle for tea and coffee as well as for cooking purposes (rice, potatoes, vegetables etc).
BEVERAGES
We sell a variety of beverages including beer, wine and soda. Please refer to our beverage menu for what we offer as well as prices. Let us know what we can provide for you to stock your fridge for your stay.
GARBAGE/TRASH
There are two black buckets in the kitchen, both are labelled. One is for general garbage/refuse and the other is for compost. Use the red crate for empty plastic water bottles and glass bottles.
Keep Little Elephant Camp clean, DO NOT LITTER
WATER
Little Elephant Camp receives it’s water supply from a gravity-fed scheme that originates in the foothills of the Rwenzori mountains. Water is a valuable resource and not always reliable. We ask you to be responsible and conserve where you can.
The water from the tap can be used for filling the kettle for tea and coffee as well as for cooking rice, potatoes, vegetables etc.
SHOWERS
Our showers are heated by instant gas water heaters. Turn on the hot water (red tap on the left) and you will hear the heater ignite. Wait for the water to get hot (approximately 30 seconds) and THEN add cold water (blue tap on the right) to set the temperature. If your hot water shuts off during your shower, turn off all the water and start again. Sometimes the flame blows out and starting again corrects the issue. We do our best to make sure that the gas bottle has sufficient gas, but if you do run out, or encounter any problems with operation please let management know.
FIREWOOD & CHARCOAL
Firewood and charcoal are provided. Please let us know when you plan to BBQ or have a fire and we’ll make sure you have an adequate supply. During the dry season, we ask that you be extra vigilant with your campfire and BBQ and not to leave them unattended or make a large fire. DO NOT make a fire or carry fire away from the designated areas (campfire ring and BBQ). Children playing with fire is NOT allowed. During certain times of extremely dry conditions, we implement fire restrictions. This is to ensure the safety of our camp and guests and we appreciate your understanding.
WILDLIFE, ANIMALS & BIRDS
Little Elephant Camp is on the boundary of Queen Elizabeth National Park and animals do roam freely. DO NOT approach the animals and DO NOT feed any of the wildlife or birds. Please keep a safe distance from them and respect that we are in their habitat and don’t harass them. DO NOT enter into the national park under any circumstances. Please use a torch/flashlight when moving around your camp at night to be sure there are no wild animals in your path.
RAIN & STORMS
If we experience a storm with a lot of wind, it’s possible rain may get into the tents. In the bottom portion of the night stand trunk is two cloths for mopping up water if necessary. For any reason should you have a lot of water in your tent, please let management know and we can assist you.
TENT WINDOWS & DOORS
The sleeping tents are designed in such a way that they are effectively a netted room. Although we don’t have a large mosquito presence, we recommend that people keep the tents closed between dusk and dawn and in doing so generally we don’t find mosquitoes or other insects inside of the tents. It is also advisable to keep the doors of your sleeping tents closed when you are not in the camp to avoid anything unwanted from going inside.
If we get a storm throughout the night, staff will come to close up your main kitchen, dining and mess tent windows. Please ensure that you close your bedroom windows yourself to stay dry.
VALUABLES
DO NOT leave money, phones, electronics, passports, cameras, binoculars or any other valuables unattended. Please use the lock box provided in your sleeping tent. Little Elephant will not be held responsible for any loss of items.
SECURITY
We have 24 hour security on site. Please note that they patrol the property at night with torches/flashlights so don’t be alarmed. For your safety, stay within your camp at night and use a torch/flashlight when walking around your camp.
SMOKING & CANDLES
Please refrain from smoking or using candles or open flame inside of the tents. An ashtray (tin can) has been provided outside of the main tent. Leave your cigarette butts in the tin so that we can keep the camp clean and safe for animals and birdlife as well as prevent unwanted fires.
FOOTWEAR
Little Elephant Camp is naturally landscaped with numerous Acacia trees and as a result, there are Acacia thorns on the ground. It is advised that you wear footwear when walking around your camp to avoid injury. Bare feet are not advisable.

Burn Management at Little Elephant Camp
During the dry seasons, you may notice patches of burnt grass around the camp and wonder why? These areas are where we have undertaken prescribed burning. Prescribed burning is the controlled application of fire to the land to reduce wildfire hazards, clear downed trees, control plant diseases, improve rangeland and wildlife habitats, and restore natural ecosystems.
Ecological importance
Fire is as natural as rain and although it’s not nice to experience or look at the aftermath, it keeps the ecological cycle going. With time, in the absence of burning, the plant matter becomes unpalatable to the animals. This results in a lack of food for the grazers. It may seem that the environment is hot and bare after the fire and that animals have moved off, however after the first signs of rain, lush grass shoots start to appear which attract new life and grazers back to the area. The new shoots of grass are full of minerals and nutrients and provide rich feeding grounds for the grazers. The process of burning also helps to control the encroachment of undesirable or invasive species of plants.
It’s a matter of control
All of our burns are controlled and are of course more strategic than wildfires. We can take into account the weather conditions, wind direction, wind speed and target only certain areas of the camp. Targeted areas usually consist of old plant matter that over time has lost its nutrients and palatability and areas around the watering points that we have scattered through the camp for the animals. We also manage our burning in stages, which means that there is a constant supply of mineral and nutrient rich grass for the animals.
Preventative firebreaks
Bush fires are a reality and hold the potential to get out of control. Our controlled burning program involves burning fire breaks around the camp. This means that if a bush fire approaches, there is no way for the fire to come into the camp as it will burn out at the fire break. Security is of the utmost importance to us and preventing fires is a part of our security measures.
How we carry out our controlled burns
Once we have identified an area for burning and analysed the current weather conditions are ideal for the process, we light an area of the grass. Our team keeps watch over the fire and direct it in the areas they want it to burn by lighting more small fires and extinguishing the fire with specially designed fire beating mats which quickly put the fire out and stop it from going where we don’t want it to go. Once the designated area has been burnt, our controlled burn is over and we wait for the rain to bring the new green grass.
We hope we’ve shed a bit of light on our methods of fire management at Little Elephant Camp. Should you have any questions, please ask.
